Joszi Koppay was born in Vienna in 1859 with Hungarian nationality. Baron - Joszi Appad Koppay of Drеtoma, his official title. His family did not live in Den for long; a year after the birth of the boy, they moved to their native Hungary, to Budapest. He inherited the title of Peerage from his paternal ancestors, a Viscount in Liechtenstein. His mother came from a simple middle class "Niederösterreichs" family. He was trained as an architect, but devoted his life to painting, becoming a student in Munich in 1884. His teachers were A. Makarta and H. Canon. In 1887 he became court painter in Madrid, but never settled in Spain, but returned to Germany. He spent a lot of time in Paris. This is probably where he started his career.
