Artist Johann Hamza (1850-1927) (41 works)
Johann Hamza, author of architectural views, interiors and genre scenes, was born in the Czech town of Telsch. To study painting, he came to the capital of the empire, Vienna, and took a course at the Academy of Arts, where his teacher was Edward von Engert.
Johann Hamza's style was formed under the influence of the Rococo culture with its luxury, grace and refined hedonism. In his small, intimate canvases, an interest in detailed description is combined with the ability to convey the richness of textures of materials.
Hamza actively participated in exhibitions: in 1879 - 1890, his works were repeatedly demonstrated in Vienna, Munich, Dresden; in 1891 at the London Exhibition he was awarded a gold medal. The artist’s paintings were very popular and loved by representatives of wide circles of society, so they were often published in illustrated magazines. The flourishing of Viennese genre painting in the 1980s is associated with Hamza’s work.
