Born in Albano Laziale, near Rome. His parents were Austrians. Father, Karl von Blaas, was a well-known artist working in the late Biedermeier historical genre.
Later the family moved to Venice, where Karl von Blaas became a professor at the Academy of Venice. Both sons decided to continue the family business, Julius becomes an animal painter, while Eugene is more attracted to genre paintings from the life of ordinary Venetians. The first he took lessons from his father, at the Art Academy of Rome and the Academy of Venice.
