Magnus Hjalmar Munsterhjelm (Finnish: Magnus Hjalmar Munsterhjelm; October 19, 1840, Tuulos, Grand Duchy of Finland - April 2, 1905, Helsingfors, Grand Duchy of Finland) was a Finnish landscape artist.
Born on October 19, 1840 in the commune of Tuulos in the family of Gustav Munsterhjelm (Gustaf Riggert Munsterhjelm) and Mathilda von Essen (Mathilda Charlotta Eleonora von Essen) in the Grand Duchy of Finland. The parents wanted the boy to become an artist, but Hjalmar himself dreamed of a career as a sailor and therefore entered the maritime school in Turku. During his studies, he took part in a sailing regatta in Spain twice in 1858 and 1859.
In 1860, his father sent the boy to Düsseldorf, where he met the Finnish artist Werner Holmberg and was admitted to the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts, from which he graduated in 1865 first in his class.
After graduating from the Academy in Düsseldorf, the artist studied in Karlsruhe from 1865 to 1866 and took private lessons from Hans Gude from 1867 to 1870. He returned to Finland in 1870, when hostilities began between Germany and France.
He died on April 2, 1905 in Helsingfors.
