After several years of studying painting and traveling in Europe, Stephanie returned to the United States to further study fine art and work in the diverse landscapes of New England, California, Colorado, Florida and Arizona. As a member of the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters, she took every chance to get out into the fresh air with other members of the society and paint plein air, whenever possible in the summer, and in the studio she painted mainly flowers.
In 2003, Stephanie met the artist who became her friend and mentor, the famous master of painting, Richard Schmid. Richard suggested that she tighten her belt and start learning to draw again, but in oil, instead of the usual pastel. Also, Schmid, during plein air painting sessions, invited Stephanie to paint next to him. Under his guidance, Stephanie blossomed as an artist, resulting in her paintings receiving numerous awards, including the Grumbacher Medallion, a gold award from the Degas Pastel Society for exceptional achievement in painting, the Connecticut Pastel Society's Herman Margulies Award, and the Catherine Lorillard Wolf Prize. and many other awards. Her flower paintings have been exhibited numerous times and have been included in several permanent museum collections. During her more than 30-year career as an artist, Stephanie Birdsall has earned a strong international reputation as an outstanding artist and teacher.
