The painter Azat Galimov belongs to that generation of St. Petersburg artists, the beginning of whose active creative activity coincided with the time of political transformations in our state. Changes have affected all areas of life, including art. The declared freedom of self-expression turned heads. All the more surprising is the artist’s constancy in following the path once chosen.
Azat Galimov spent the first years of his life in the northern city of Inta, where there were many representatives of the exiled intelligentsia, among whom was the first art teacher. It was she who greatly influenced the formation of the personality of the future artist. She instilled in him not only a passion for drawing, but also a love for the city of Leningrad, stories about which left an indelible mark on the young man’s mind and were fateful, since they determined the vector of his life for many years. After graduating from the Art Restoration School in Volzhsk and serving in the army, Azat moved to Leningrad (1979), where he continued his art education at the Leningrad Art and Art Pedagogical University named after. V. Mukhina (now St. Petersburg State Academy of Art and Industry named after A.L. Stieglitz).
Based on the traditions of his predecessors, representatives of the Russian realistic school of painting, the artist works a lot in the open air, trying to convey the state as accurately as possible, to capture the character and spirit of the place, measuring it with his feelings and attitude towards a specific nature. Working with the subtle, elusive material of natural impressions, he manages not to lose the sharpness of his vision and not slide into banality. Apparently, it helps him to avoid the inertia of perception and preserve the individuality and meaningfulness of his reaction by the fact that he periodically “changes the scenery” - he travels a lot to different parts of the world, refreshing his impressions, accumulating the experience of natural perception, literally “feeling” the world around him with his brush.
