Leonid (real name Israel) Aronovich Shvartsman was born on August 30, 1920 in Minsk. He began to engage in artistic craft at the age of sixteen in a studio where Valentin Volkov, a graduate of the Imperial Academy of Arts, taught. At eighteen, he went to Leningrad, hoping to enter the Academy of Arts. But the knowledge and skills for admission were not enough, and before the Great Patriotic War he studied at an art school at the Academy. After the war, he moved to Moscow, where for the first time in his life he saw an animated film (until then he knew about the existence of such a genre only by hearsay). It was an animation classic - Walt Disney's Bambi. The film made such a strong impression on Shvartsman that he decided to become an animator and entered the art department of VGIK, from which he graduated in 1951. Shvartsman worked at the Soyuzmultfilm film studio from 1948 to 2001, first as an assistant artist, from 1951 as a production designer, and from 1975 as a director. International awards have been awarded to such works by Schwartzman as the animated films The Golden Antelope, Mitten, The Snow Queen, 38 Parrots, and Monkeys. He created the visual image of Cheburashka - a character invented by Eduard Uspensky - for the cartoon of the same name. It was thanks to Shvartsman that Cheburashka acquired his distinctive feature - two large ears. For many years he collaborated with Grigory Oster - series with Kitten Woof, 38 parrots and Beware the monkeys! As a production designer, Leonid Shvartsman worked in more than 50 animated films, including The Golden Antelope (1954), The Paint Thieves (1959), Uncle Styopa the Policeman (1964), Mittens (1967), I'm Waiting for You, Whale! (1986), The Trusting Dragon (1988), Dora Dora Tomato (2001). Leonid Shvartsman is a laureate of the Hollywood Children's Award (1997) for his contribution to children's animation, winner of the prize for his contribution to the profession of the XI Open Russian Animated Film Festival (ORFAK) in Suzdal (2006). Leonid Shvartsman is a member of the Nika Academy of Cinematic Arts. Member of the International Animated Film Association (ASIFA).
