The son of artist William Smith, Alfred William Smith was born in Taranaki, New Zealand in 1825. The family returned to England in 1856, where he attended South Kensington School. Alfred William Strutt painted many animal paintings, genre scenes and hunting scenes, and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. The artist died in 1915.
