Keisai Eisen (1790 – 1848), also known by his pen name Ikeda Eisen and Ippitsuan. Japanese artist, representative of ukiyo-e, specializing in bijinga (woodblock prints of beautiful women). His heroines are always exquisite, their clothes are richly decorated, and their faces radiate beauty and tenderness.

His best works date from 1818-1830, including okubi-e - portraits with an enlarged head.

Eisen was born in Edo into the Ikeda family, the son of a famous calligrapher. The father taught him to draw, skillfully use the color palette, and then sent his son to the Kano school. Here the boy took the name of his teacher - Keisai. After the death of his father, Keisai changes his mentor, takes the name Eisen and studies all aspects of the art of ukiyo-e.

His early works were influenced by his mentor, but he soon developed his own style.

He produced a number of surimono (prints produced in small editions for a narrow circle of amateurs), erotic prints, as well as landscapes, including the famous series of prints “Sixty-nine Stations of Kiso Kaido,” which the master began with his own hand and was completed by Utagawa Hiroshige.

Keisai Eisen far surpassed his predecessors by creating more worldly subjects and subjects in bijinga works, replacing their grace and elegance with sensuality and tenderness. He created a huge number of portraits, in which researchers of Keisai Eisen's work highlight the tendency to record the fashion of that time.

In the master's works one can see mature feelings and emotions. Eisen creates a huge number of humorous and erotic prints, as well as drawings in which children are the main characters.

He also showed himself as a writer and even created an autobiography, where he showed himself only from the negative side - a reckless drunkard and a lover of brothels.
