Young ladies of the century before last carefully copied watercolors by the French artist Pierre-Joseph Redoute (1759 - 1840), who painted exclusively flowers, into albums.
Redoute studied with Dutch and Flemish painters, and Queen Marie Antoinette, admiring his technique, granted him the title of court painter. The master, nicknamed by his contemporaries “Raphael of Flowers,” created more than 6,000 floral drawings, engravings and paintings, distinguished by high botanical accuracy.
Roses, of course, attracted the special attention of the album owners and their girlfriends, and Redoute painted a lot of them! The first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, the French Empress Josephine, collected a magnificent collection of many varieties of roses in the gardens of the Malmaison castle. They say that all Napoleonic military leaders brought the best varieties of roses from conquered countries to France, and Redoute saved them from withering in his paintings.
