Italian illustrator Roberto Innocenti was born in a small town near Florence in 1940. At the age of 13, he was forced to leave school and go to work in a steel mill to help his family. But his passion for drawing was so great that at eighteen he left for Rome to an animation studio, where he works to this day. Roberto Innocenti beautifully illustrated Hoffmann's famous Christmas story, The Nutcracker. He moved the story to his beloved London, into interiors filled with joy and warmth. Specialists from major publishing houses noted that “... the fairy tale in Innocenti’s illustrations fit perfectly into the life of old London; ...the book is a beautiful example of bookmaster art; ... captivated by the palette of browns and grays; bright prospects." He is rightfully a favorite of both readers and critics. As Amy J. Meeker noted, "...Innocenti provides us with a wonderful opportunity to experience the drama of history through visually eloquent illustrations..." These illustrations earned Roberto Innocenti the Award for Excellence in the Fine Arts in Children's Literature.
