Peder Mork Monsted was born on December 10, 1859, in Balle, Denmark.
Peder Mork Mensted, a master of landscape, one of the brightest representatives of the “golden age” of Danish painting, was born in the eastern part of Denmark on the Jutland Peninsula near the city of Grenaa. In 1875, Mensted entered the Copenhagen Academy of Arts, where his teachers were Andries Fritz and Julius Exner; a year later he left her to study at the painting school of Peter Severin Kroer; later he went to Paris, where he studied in the studio of the then popular painter Adolphe-William Bougereau. The artist’s skill was improved during numerous travels – through Switzerland, Italy, France, North Africa, Greece. Peder Mensted's landscapes, devoted primarily to the depiction of fields, forests and rural views, were very popular and brought the artist well-deserved success. The artist's works were shown at exhibitions in Charlottenburg, as well as at salons in Paris and Munich.
In the landscape “Sunset over the Lake,” high pictorial skill is combined with deep observations of the life of nature. With poetry and at the same time precision in detail, Mensted captures that changing moment when the sun's disk touches the edge of the horizon, and the nature of the lighting changes with every second, transforming the colors and shades of the landscape. Sunset rays pierce the grove, creating a wonderful optical effect of a smoky golden aura. The water also adds a sense of fairy-tale charm to the landscape. Its motionless surface is likened to a mirror, and its reflection is likened to a mysterious behind-the-mirror world living its own life. The aesthetic “Sunny Day” has a more restrained flavor; the artist, with little means and great skill, achieves what is so valuable in painting - a sense of mood. Mensted's landscapes invite long-term contemplation. Together with the artist, the viewer admires the world, beautiful in all its manifestations, so recognizable and, at the same time, as if hiding a secret.
Died June 20, 1941 (age 81), Fredensborg, Denmark.
The artist's works are kept in the museums of Aalborg and Bautzen (Denmark).
