Edouard Cortes was born in Lagny, France, on April 26, 1882. Edward was the son of Antonio Cortes, a Spanish artist. Antonio was born in Seville in 1827, and established himself as a painter of the rural genre. In 1855 he went to Paris. Antonio had three children - Edouard, Henri and Jeanne - and although all had artistic talents, it was Edouard who became a famous artist.
Antonio began teaching Eduardo at an early age and enrolled him in a private primary school, where he continued his school education until he was 13 years old. From that moment on, he devoted his life to art. In 1899, at the age of 16, he exhibited his first work at the Société des Artistes Français, "La Labor". The work was well received by critics and the public, which helped establish Edward's favorable reputation in Paris. It was at the turn of the century that he began painting street scenes and became the most famous singer of the streets of Paris and its monuments. One of the most prolific artists of his time, Cortes found his niche and successfully stayed in it. His views of Paris are among the most striking and beautiful images of this genre; he painted the city, in all its seasons, for more than 60 years.
Edouard married Fernande Joyeuse in 1914, and their child Jacqueline Simone was born in 1916. Fernanda died in 1918 and shortly thereafter Edouard decided to marry his daughter-in-law Lucienne Joyeuse. They settled in Paris, where Edward continued to paint views of his beloved city. By the mid-1920s, Edouard and his family had moved to Lagny (in Normandy) and he began painting scenes of rural life - including landscapes, interior scenes and still lifes. He was an active member of the Union of Fine Arts in Lagny. He has earned many awards and great fame.
During World War II, Cortez and his family spent time in Cormelles-le-Royal (in Normandy), in an attempt to escape the harsh realities of war. By the early 1950s he moved to Lagny, where he lived for the rest of his life. His beautiful images of Paris were always in demand and he continued to paint them until his death in 1969.
