Little Mandy and her "father" – illustrator Dean Eagle
Dean Yeagle was an American artist, illustrator, cartoonist, and animator. This talented artist created a huge number of works throughout his life. But his most iconic character was and remains the sexy blonde Mandy. It was this silly yet utterly seductive character, whom everyone has likely seen at least once in their lives, that made Yeagle world-famous.
Like many other children, Dean Yeagle was fascinated by Walt Disney cartoons from an early age. While others outgrew this stage and developed more mature interests, Yeagle's interest in animation only grew. Immediately after high school, he enrolled in art college. However, he was unimpressed by the lessons, which involved drawing antique columns and fruit. After just a year, Yeagle dropped out and went to Philadelphia to finally draw cartoons.
Dean Yeagle didn't just realize his dream of getting his hands on Disney—he became one of the most renowned artists in the legendary studio's history. He also worked with Warner Bros., MGM, Playboy, and other entertainment industry giants.
In adulthood, Yeagle realized another of his dreams: he founded his own animation studio, Caged Beagle Productions, Inc. Here, no one told him what or how to draw. Over the years, the artist created many original characters. But none can compare in popularity to little Mandy.
This cute and exaggeratedly sexy girl with a simple face became a favorite not only of Dean, but of millions of people around the world. She appeared in Playboy magazine, cartoons, advertisements, and was even reproduced as plastic figurines. Her "father" says of his favorite:
"She's wonderful. She's very sweet. She's charming. You'll like her. And she'll like you."
At one time, Eagle was accused of presenting an overly young woman as a sexual object, so the artist was forced to counter these attacks:
"Some people think Mandy is younger than I meant... it's all because of the pigtails." But at the same time, pigtails are an indicator of innocence, not youth. She's mature and independent, having already gone to college, and her behavior reflects this. So, she's 22—right in the middle of her "sexual age." I see her as generally naive, sensual, and sexual by nature, but not provocative. She expects decency from people, and she's so frank and pure that she usually gets it."
In interviews, Eagle often adds that his Mandy has a sexy look but no sex life. The artist asks everyone to remain respectful and not surround his heroine with inappropriate speculation. Of course, few heed the artist's words. Mandy has been a favorite heroine of less-than-respectable fan art for years. But there's nothing you can do about it—that's the price of popularity, and the artist has stopped paying attention.
