Story
The exact date of the founding of the city is not known, already in the 11th century BC. e. the city was known as Physkos and was part of Caria. In the 10th century BC. came under the influence of neighboring Rhodes. From the 6th century BC. under the rule of the Persians. In 334 BC, after the arrival of Alexander the Great, the city was given to Rhodes. From 164 BC the city came under Roman control and was finally annexed to Rome in the 1st century. BC. Since 395, part of the Byzantine Empire. In the 7th-8th centuries. the city was devastated by the Arabs. At the end of the 13th century. the city was captured by the Turks of the Beylik of Menteshe. In 1391 it was captured by the Ottoman Turks, and in 1424 it was finally annexed to the Ottoman Empire. In 1522, by order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, a fortress was built, and the city was renamed Marmaris (from ancient Greek - Shining, Brilliant). In 1957, the city was destroyed by an earthquake, after which it was rebuilt. Since the 1980s, the city has received a powerful impetus for the development of the tourism industry.
