Attractions

Paris has a huge number of attractions, which include not only architectural buildings, but also streets, bridges and squares.

One of the most famous attractions is the openwork metal Eiffel Tower, built according to the design of the engineer Eiffel. The tower was intended as a temporary structure to serve as the entrance to the 1889 World's Fair. But she not only survived the event itself, but has since become a true symbol of the city.

To the north and south of the Eiffel Tower, the Sacré-Coeur basilica, built on top of the Montmartre hill, and the lone Tour Montparnasse tower, especially standing out against the backdrop of its “flat” area, rise above the skyline.

The historical axis of architectural monuments crosses the city from the center to the west. Starting from the world-famous Louvre Museum, it continues through the Tuileries Garden, Avenue des Champs-Élysées to the Arc de Triomphe, built in the 19th century in the center of Place des Stars. In the 1960s on the continuation of the line, the La Défense quarter was built, the center of which was the Grand Arch of Défense.

In the very center of the historical part there is the Invalides House, which houses a military museum; the remains of Napoleon Bonaparte are also buried here. There is also the former Pantheon Church, guarding the eternal rest of once famous French figures.

Another reminder of the raging battles for the freedom of the French people is the Statue of Liberty installed on Swan Island. The original of this statue was donated to the United States of America in 1886, and has been greeting travelers at the port of New York ever since.

The historical center of the city is the Ile de la Cité, where two of the most famous churches in France are located: Notre Dame Cathedral and the Holy Chapel. Next to the Ile de la Cité there is another island, Saint-Louis, famous for its ice cream, recognized as one of the best in the world.

The architectural trends of the 20th century left the city such monuments as the Georges Pompidou Cultural Center, which now houses the Museum of Modern Art, the new opera building on the Place de la Bastille, the Les Halles shopping center, built on the site of the “Womb of Paris”, as well as the Défense district, which represents is an architectural complex of skyscrapers and buildings and structures with avant-garde forms.

The park ensemble Scientific and Industrial Town, which houses a large museum of science and technology, is also of undoubted interest.
