This week, Mexico celebrated the 200th anniversary of the start of the War of Independence. In September 1810, Mexican priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called on the people to rebel against the Spaniards. This cry later became known as the Dolores cry. Soon after, constant skirmishes with the Spanish escalated into a full-fledged war that lasted more than 10 years, eventually leading to Mexican independence. 200 years later, tens of thousands of Mexicans took to the streets of Mexico City to celebrate this significant date. However, the celebration took place in the shadow of unpleasant events, amid the drug war and criticism of the government. This issue contains photographs from the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence.
