Betsy Youngquist is a woman who creates fantastically fabulous sculptures covered with beaded jewelry mosaics.
Betsy uses the faces, arms and legs from antique porcelain dolls. All kinds of beads, glass beads and even corals are also used. All of Betsy's sculptures are extremely unusual, including due to her belief that sometimes the spirit of an animal awakens inside each of us, trying to convey something to humanity.
But perhaps the most recognizable thing in Betsy’s work is her eyes. For her sculpture dolls, as well as for her costume jewelry, Betsy uses hand-made glass doll eyes dating back to the First World War.
Betsy was born in Rockford, Illinois in 1965. While in the fourth grade, he and a friend came up with the idea of illustrating the book “Two Friends,” a story about an eagle and a horse who met in the wild and became friends. The book contained ordinary drawn pictures, one of which - an eagle sitting on the back of a horse - became the beginning of the work of the young artist. The red bird on the horse's back has been given new life in color and in mosaic, both with human legs! This is how anthropomorphism first appeared in Betsy’s work...
Betsy graduated from the University of Chicago in 1987 and received a Bachelor of Arts degree and then a Master of Arts degree from Madison University in 1992.
Betsy returned to her homeland as a professional artist, exhibiting her work at the Smithsonian Crafts Factory. Her works became three-dimensional and acquired “human” eyes.
Betsy Youngquist's work interweaves the human spirit with the essence of the animal, allowing us to look at the world through a surreal lens. The sculptures created by the artist reflect her interest in humans, animals and mythology.
Sculptor R. Scott Long collaborates with Betsy to create the form and design for the works.
The sculptures created by Betsy and Scott are presented in many international exhibitions and throughout the United States, they are charming and frightening at the same time.
