Photographer and photo editor Carrie Boretz always felt New York City was overflowing with people who knew nothing but kissing, sleeping, and dreaming of beauty. Her book, "Street," chronicles her adventures in the metropolis from 1975 to 1998, as she breathlessly explored a city teeming with conflict, anxiety, and yet also kindness.

While collaborating with The New York Times, the photographer realized her predisposition to revisit the places to which she had an emotional attachment. It must be said that Carrie never wanted to cross moral and ethical boundaries on her journey to the epicenter of ordinary city life. On the contrary, she always sought to explore the city and its inhabitants, becoming one of them, embracing the sensitivity and vulnerability characteristic of New Yorkers.

Her goal was never to report on any tabloid sensations; her main theme was the small contradictions and clashes with circumstances that we often overlook.

During Boretz's most prolific years, New York was a rather harsh and unforgiving city, but the photographs included in "Street" reveal those fragile, delicate connections between people that kept the idea of humanity alive. Some prefer to characterize those times as "the years when nothing was sacred," but Carrie's photographs reveal a purity of heart that seems like some incomprehensible, eternal treasure, hidden somewhere nearby, suspended in the air of parks, buildings, and intersections that never sleep.
