When the Music Stopped: Sad Pianos in Abandoned Buildings (22 photos)
Florence-based photographer Eleonora Costi has spent the last four years photographing abandoned villas across Italy and derelict buildings in other countries. Her collection also includes many eerie photographs of abandoned pianos in empty houses. She believes pianos lend an indescribable charm and a touch of mystery to abandoned places, helping us hear the quiet music of other times.
Eleonora's interest in abandoned places was sparked by reading an article about the 14th-century Villa Napoleone, located a few miles north of Milan. The photographer says it was dark, damp, and very quiet. It's the kind of surreal silence you only experience in abandoned places. There's a feeling that someone could come around the corner at any moment. Since then, Eleonora has researched more than 50 villas across northern and central Italy, which she found through Google.
