It's simply impossible to take your eyes off this eye (9 photos)
A winning shot taken in our North.
Photographer Alexey Kharitonov has distinguished himself in the most prestigious wildlife photography competition. He submitted a series of drone shots titled "Views of the North," and his work "Eye of the Tundra" won the Portfolio category. This "eye" is a lake located in the Olenyok River valley, in the tundra of polar Yakutia.
This photograph will soon be hanging on the walls of the Natural History Museum in London.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is being held for the 61st time. This year, it received more than 60,000 entries from 113 countries. Only 18 photographers won awards in various categories.
Wim van den Heever from Namibia won the main category, "Wildlife Photographer," for his image of a brown hyena.
This isn't the first time photographers have won at this exhibition. Last year, Igor Metelsky's photo was named best in the "Animals in Their Habitat" category. It captured a stretching lynx, captured using a camera trap in the Far East. The most interesting thing is that they had to wait a full six months for this moment to be captured.
In 2023, Mikhail Korostelev won the "Underwater" category at the same competition. His photo captures a family of hippos in a lake in South Africa.
Sergey Gorshkov won the 2020 Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. His photo depicts an Amur tigress hugging a tree trunk. ![]()
