Don Hong-Oai was born in 1929 in China. At age 7, he began studying the basics of photography at the Saigon Portrait Studio. In 1950, he came to Vietnam, where he worked as a photography teacher at the university's art college. In 1979, he immigrated to the United States illegally. He lived in San Francisco, in Chinatown, where he had a small photography studio. Every few years he traveled to China to take new photographs. Died in 2004. Don Hong-Oai's photographs, considered examples of Asian pictorialism, have only become known to the general public in recent years, but his work has nevertheless received numerous prizes from Kodak, Ilford and Photokina. Don Hong-Oai brings to his photographs the subtle beauty and traditional motifs of Chinese painting (birds, boats, mountains, cherry blossoms), creating a picture filled with visual allegories.
