An Interesting Fact About the Similarity Between the Great Artist Surikov and the Subject of His Own Painting (2 photos)
Vasily Surikov, the master of historical painting, always approached each painting with great responsibility, and his masterpiece "Stepan Razin" was no exception.
The painting was completed in 1906, but four years later, when it had already acquired an owner, Surikov returned to the work to partially repaint it.
The portrait of the painting's protagonist was reworked, resulting in the image of Stepan Razin bearing a physical resemblance to its creator.
Confirmation that Surikov's self-portrait is hidden in the image of Razin is supported by a well-known fact: the artist commissioned an ataman costume for himself and wore it to better immerse himself in the character. A photograph of the artist in this attire even survives. ![]()
