That case when touching the great did not turn out to be as spiritual as expected.

Researchers from the company CouponBirds have calculated the top 10 most disappointing masterpieces of painting according to ordinary visitors to museums and galleries. For this purpose, 18,176 reviews were collected, which mentioned one hundred of the most famous works of art in the world and the museums where they are stored.

Just over half (53.8%) of all works in the study are exhibited in five cities: New York, Paris, London, Chicago and Florence. And the results are most disappointing for the hyped Louvre and the Museum of Modern Art in New York - about a quarter of all reviews about them were negative.

10th place - “Birth of Venus”

Artist: Sandro Botticelli

Negative reviews: 23.7%

It is important to note that most often it is not the works of art themselves that disappoint, but the conditions for viewing them. Many of painting's greatest masterpieces have become victims of their own success, attracting unorganized crowds and increasing ticket prices.

9th place - “Blossoming almond branches”

Artist: Vincent van Gogh

Negative reviews: 24.4%

To compile the rating, certain phrases and individual words were analyzed: disappointing, overrated, unfortunately, annoying, boring, overpriced, not worth it. Positive epithets were also taken into account, after which the study authors correlated positive with negative.

8th place - “School of Athens”

Artist: Rafael Santi

Negative reviews: 25.2%

141 million visitors a year account for just the top 100 most popular art museums and galleries in the world. And among so many people, there will be those who are ready to grumble in reviews about what they didn’t like.

7th place - “Guernica”

Artist: Pablo Picasso

Negative reviews: 26.2%

Although "Guernica" climbed so high on this list, it is truly impressive - if only for its size. In this post you can see it and some other works of art from other, unusual angles and be thoroughly puzzled.

6th place - “Starry Night”

Artist: Vincent van Gogh

Negative reviews: 28.9%

For the top 5 disappointing paintings, the researchers provide some specifics.

5th place - “Impression.” Rising Sun"

Artist: Claude Monet

Negative reviews: 29.4%

The innovative painting itself, which gave the name to the whole movement (the original name was “Impression, soleil levant”, hence “impressionism”), is good and interesting, but the not-so-good location of the Marmottan-Monet Museum spoils everything, leading to many negative reviews.

4th place - “Thirty-two cans of Campbell's soup”

Artist: Andy Warhol

Negative feedback: 30.5%

The installation with cans of soup, as an example of contemporary art that challenges human understanding of what art is, still remains too complex. 30% of visitors still don’t understand what’s funny. But more than 60 years have passed!

3rd place - “Persistence of Memory”

Artist: Salvador Dali

Negative reviews: 31.2%

First of all, visitors may be disappointed by the size of the painting: only 24 × 33 cm. But what infuriates people most of all is the possibility that you simply will not be able to see the painting in the museum. Because she's not there. And no one will tell you about this in advance. Admission to the New York museum is almost $30—the kind of money you'd pay to suddenly discover that The Persistence of Memory is no longer in its place today, having been temporarily moved to another gallery. Nightmare!

2nd place - “Freedom leading the people”

Artist: Eugene Delacroix

Negative feedback: 34.5%

Eugene Delacroix's epic painting of a triumphant crowd breaking through a barricade is not unlike the experience of viewing it. The canvas turned out to be a victim of the general organization for which the Louvre is “famous”. The summary review looks like this:

If you like queuing, pushing and pushing, and not works of art, then you will definitely like the Louvre.

1st place - “Mona Lisa”

Artist: Leonardo Da Vinci

Negative reviews: 37.1%

Is it worth paying 22 euros for admission and training your elbows in a crowd of strangers to catch a glimpse of a painting measuring 76.8 by 53 cm? Almost four out of ten reviews of the Mona Lisa are negative. “Never been so disappointed” and “Torture” stand out among hundreds of critical mentions from reviewers. The word "crowd" was mentioned a total of 127 times in reviews.

We can conclude that the Louvre administration urgently needs to do something with the procedure for tourist visits. Two of the most famous films have received a huge number of negative reviews solely because of the conditions under which people are allowed to look at them.
