Willem de Beer was involved in painting from early childhood and was taught the basics of oil painting by his father, who was himself a popular amateur artist. His first oil painting was sold to a local lawyer in his hometown when Willem was only 9 years old.

After studying at the University of Pretoria, he became a commercial artist.

Since 1985 Willem has devoted all his time to becoming a professional artist. Since then, most of his work has consisted of wildlife painting.
