Arthur Hughes (English Arthur Hughes, January 27, 1831 - December 23, 1915) was an English illustrator and painter who painted in the Pre-Raphaelite style.
He studied at the Royal Academy of Arts and discovered the Pre-Raphaelites while reading Rostock magazine. At the beginning of his career, Hughes was strongly influenced by Millais, and like him, he depicted Ophelia (for example, Ophelia, 1851-53, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester).
He painted paintings dedicated to the works of John Keats. Arthur Hughes later illustrated some of George MacDonald's books. In total, he left behind about 700 paintings and sketches, as well as more than 750 illustrations.
The most famous paintings by Arthur Hughes are April Love, 1855-56, Tate Gallery, London and The Long Engagement.
