Thomas Moran is an American artist of British origin. Thomas was the most famous, most talented and popular of the Moran family of artists. The Moran family emigrated from England in 1844 and settled in Pennsylvania. He began his artistic career in his teens as an apprentice at the Philadelphia woodcarving firm of Scattergood & Telfer. After two years of studying with them, he created his own illustrations and watercolors, and in the 1860s he began creating lithographs of landscapes around the Great Lakes. While studying in England in 1862, Moran became familiar with the work of Turner, and Turner's approach to the use of colors and the choice of landscapes influenced Moran. During the 1870s and 1880s, Moran's engravings appeared in many magazines and gift editions. Debunking modern art on his deathbed in his 90th year, he said: “I see my future landscapes on the ceiling and paint them in my mind...” Moran died in Santa Barbara in 1926.
