Hilder is an accomplished painter of oils and watercolors, as well as the illustrator of numerous books, including Moby Dick, Treasure Island and Mary Webb's Precious Bane. When Rowland realized that what he liked best was painting in watercolor, he began to study on his own, studying the classical English masters. He was elected to the Royal Institute of Watercolor Painters, of which he served as president from 1964 to 1974.
It is difficult to name another landscape painter of his generation whose work is so widely known and whose landscapes are so beloved by audiences. Hilder's popularity also increased during his collaboration with his wife Edith, when they collaborated on the illustrations for Shell's Guide to the Countryside, which was serialized in the color magazines Picture Post and Illustrated, reaching millions of readers each week. Rowland painted landscapes, and Edith painted flowers.
