Benozzo Gozzoli (Italian: Benozzo Gozzoli, 1420-1497) - Italian artist. Born in 1420 in Florence.
Son of tailor Lese di Sandro. Real name Benozzo di Lese di Sandro (Italian: Benozzo di Lese di Sandro). He worked together with Lorenzo and Vittorio Ghiberti on the bronze doors of the Baptistery of Florence in 1444. Together with Fra Angelico he worked in the monastery of San Marco (Florence) 1444-1445, in the church of Pope Nicholas V (Vatican) 1447, in the church in Orvieto 1448.
He began working independently in 1450. From 1456 to 1459 it appears in various areas of central Italy. He painted the altar in Perugia in 1456. In 1458 he participated in the decoration of the coronation ceremony of Pius II. In 1459, the Medici summoned the artist to Florence to paint the walls of the church in their palace. The subject for the painting was the journey of the Magi, in which the artist depicted members of the Medici family.
In 1461, Gozzoli painted the altarpiece of the Sacra Conversazione in Florence. In 1463 he created a cycle of 17 scenes from the life of St. Augustine. In 1464 fresco of Saint Sebastian. In 1471 panel The Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas (Louvre, Paris).
Between 1465 and 1485 he created a series of 25 frescoes in Camposanto, Pisa. In 1944, most of these frescoes were destroyed during the bombing and subsequent fire. After the invasion of Italy, Charles VIII is forced to leave Pisa and return to Florence. In 1497, Gozzoli arrived in Pistoia, where his sons worked, probably for fresco painting. He died on October 4, 1497, probably from the plague. He was buried at the monastery of San Domenico.
