KARAZIN Nikolai Nikolaevich (1842, Kharkov - 1908, St. Petersburg), artist and writer. Academician (1904). Graduated from the Moscow Cadet Corps (1862). In 1865-1867 he studied at the Academy of Arts. As an officer he participated in the fighting of Russian troops in Poland (1864) and in Turkestan (1864-1870), as a war correspondent and illustrator in the Serbian-Turkish (1877) and Russian-Turkish (1877-1878) wars. Awarded the Order of St. Vladimir and golden weapons. In 1874-1879, he was part of a scientific expedition in Central Asia. He is known for his battle paintings written in the 80s: “The Capture of Tashkent”, “The Capture of Samarkand”, “The March through the Sands to Khiva” and others. Karazin is the author of many watercolor works that recreate the picture of the marching and combat life of Russian troops. For services to Russian painting he received the honorary title of academician. Karazin was also engaged in literary activities, reflecting in his books the artist’s impressions of campaigns and battles.
