PORTIELJE Jan Frederic Pieter (Holland)
1829, Amsterdam – 1908, Antwerp
Fashionable portrait painter and author of genre compositions Jan Frederik Pieter Portillier studied at the Amsterdam Art School with Valentin Bing and Jan Bret von Uberfeldt. In 1847, he continued his education at the Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts, where Diekmans was his mentor. For further professional development, Portille went to Paris for two years; then he traveled throughout France and visited Germany. Having settled in Antwerp, Portilla gained great fame, primarily as a portrait painter. Titled persons from England, France, Belgium, and Holland placed orders for him; American customers contacted us. In 1857 - 1884, the painter demonstrated his works with great success at exhibitions in Amsterdam and The Hague. Portille also introduced his two sons to painting.
The artist’s works, invariably distinguished by their high coloristic and textural mastery, can be found in museums and private collections in Europe and America.
