The term Guohua (literally, “painting of [our] country,” or as an abbreviation for Zhongguo hua, “Chinese painting”) was introduced at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century as a contrast to xianghua, that is, Western (“overseas”) painting. The name shuimokhua, that is, “ink painting,” is also used, as opposed to yuhua, that is, “oil painting.”

The painting technique itself is a renewal of Chinese painting traditions of the 3rd-2nd centuries BC. e.

In recent years, interest in technology has renewed and the style is experiencing a rebirth.
