The term Guohua (literally, “painting of [our] country,” or as an abbreviation for Zhongguo hua, “Chinese painting”) was introduced at the end of the 19th - beginning of the 20th century as a contrast to xianghua, that is, Western (“overseas”) painting. The name shuimokhua, that is, “ink painting,” is also used, as opposed to yuhua, that is, “oil painting.”
