Louis William Wayne was born on August 5, 1860 in London. After graduating from the West London School of Art he becomes a freelance artist. Cats, which he draws in many variations, become his lifelong passion.
It is known that Louis suffered from schizophrenia in the last years of his life. As the disease progresses, Wayne's style becomes less and less realistic; in the work "Early Indian Irish" the image of a cat partially turns into flower petals and leaves. During periods of exacerbation, the drawings of cats, where they can still be recognized, resemble multi-colored fractal-like patterns. Wayne's series of works are often used as examples in psychiatry textbooks to illustrate changes in creative style as a result of the development of mental illness over time.
Interest in the works of Louis Wain resurfaced only at the end of the 20th century. Now his works can be purchased for several thousand pounds, some works are valued at several tens of thousands of dollars.
