...He took things that others were even afraid to touch, things that were not only outside the sphere of art, but were opposed to art; he took the terrible, the crippled, the almost ugly, and did it fearlessly, just as a surgeon fearlessly enters a ward with the seriously wounded. He chose human suffering as his material: the fate of war veterans, victims of genocide, poverty, deprivation, madness. He looked into the eyes of the dumb, the holy fools, the nameless, who had lost everything, even the past, into the eyes of old people and children mutilated by wars - and saw in them greatness and beauty, the true scale of man, his essence, revealed precisely in the enormity of suffering.
