Alexey Petrovich Bogolyubov (March 16, 1824, Pomeranie village, Novgorod province, Russian Empire - October 27, 1896, Paris, France) - a famous Russian marine artist, master of the Russian battle marina.
Biography

Grandson of the writer A.N. Radishchev. Bogolyubov was born in the village of Pomerania in the Novgorod province on March 16 (28), 1824 in the family of a landowner, retired colonel Pyotr Gavrilovich Bogolyubov and Fyokla Alexandrovna Radishcheva (1795-1845).

Having lost his father early, he was sent to the Alexander Youth Cadet Corps, and from there he was transferred to the Naval Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg, graduating with the rank of midshipman in 1841. Served as adjutant to Vice Admiral Alexander Alekseevich Durasov. While still a cadet, Bogolyubov began painting. In 1849, he was among the officers of the ship "Kamchatka", on which Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg went to Madeira. Having become acquainted with Bogolyubov’s drawings, the Duke advised the young officer to devote himself to art.

In 1850, Bogolyubov entered the Academy of Arts. He owes his artistic education primarily to M. N. Vorobyov and B. P. Villevalde. I caught my attention with two views of the Kronstadt harbor and the painting “Flood in the Kronstadt harbor in 1824.” In 1852 he received a second gold medal for three paintings: “View of the Smolny Monastery from Okhta”, “Battle of the brig “Mercury” with two Turkish ships” (from the Turkish War of 1828) and “Departure of E.I. V. Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg of Lisbon."

Bogolyubov graduated from the Academy in 1853 with his first gold medal and was appointed artist of the main naval headquarters. After leaving naval service, he traveled around Europe for seven years. In Geneva, he used the advice of the famous Kalam; in Paris he worked in Isabey's workshop; studied with Andreas Achenbach for two years. In 1856, Bogolyubov visited Constantinople, the Danube and Sinop in order to write several sketches for paintings commissioned from him by Emperor Nikolai Pavlovich.

He accompanied the future Tsar Alexander III on a trip to Russia and made sketches (see Notes of Kachalov - Nikolai Alexandrovich Kachalov).
Upon his return, he received the title of academician, and in 1860 - professor of painting. At the same time, Bogolyubov organized an exhibition of his works in the halls of the Academy for the benefit of widows and orphans of artists. At this exhibition, the public’s special attention was drawn to paintings from the history of our fleet, commissioned by the Russian emperor, especially “Sinop” and “Kermes in Amsterdam”. Emperor Alexander II commissioned Bogolyubov to paint the history of Peter the Great's fleet.

On behalf of the hydrographic department of the Maritime Ministry, Bogolyubov sailed along the Gulf of Finland and skerries, depicting the shores and measuring the depths in the areas of ports and skerry passages. He made the same atlas in the Caspian Sea.

In 1871, Bogolyubov painted several frescoes for the Orthodox Church in Paris. In the same year, he gave the Academy up to 225 oil studies and 800 sepia and watercolor drawings.

He was the founder of the drawing school (since 1897 - named after him) and the A. N. Radishchev Art Museum in Saratov in 1885, bequeathed his works to this museum, which now form the most significant collection of his works. In recent years he lived in Paris, only occasionally visiting Russia. Thanks to his initiative, the Society for Mutual Assistance to Russian Artists was established in Paris. In Saratov he founded the Radishchev Museum, whose grandson he was. Bogolyubov’s works are in the collections of Russian museums, in particular in the Tretyakov Gallery - “Golden Horn”, “Mouth of the Neva”, “Summer Night on the Neva at the Seaside” and others.

In Moscow, in the artist’s former mansion, located at: st. Sushchevskaya, 14, the Library of Arts is based, which in 1996 was named after A.P. Bogolyubov.
