John Bagnold Burgess (21 October 1829 – 2 November 1897) was an English artist. He came from a family of famous painters.

In 1848 he went to the famous James Matthews Lee art school in Soho, where he studied painting.

From 1858 and the next thirty years, Burgess traveled to Spain once a year, often spending days with Spanish peasants, living their lives and sharing their food.

In 1860 he married Sophia, daughter of Robert Turner of Grantham, Lincolnshire.

He died on 12th November 1897 at his home in London, from congenital heart disease, which had troubled him all his life, and was buried in Paddington Cemetery, Willesden.
