Charles James Folkard - British children's book illustrator (1878–1963)
Charles Folkard began painting as a teenager and devoted his entire life to it.
Charles was born in London on April 6, 1878, and studied at St. Wood's School of Art and Goldsmiths College of Art. Possessing many talents, Charles was both a magician and the author of several plays and pantomimes for children. Folkard created and illustrated the famous Teddy Tail column in The Daily Mail from 1915 to 1920. These illustrations were later published in the book "Teddy Tail in Fairyland".
In his works, Charles skillfully mixed naturalism with caricature. Folkard created illustrations for the books "The Swiss Family Robinson" (1910), "Pinocchio: the tale of a puppet" (1911), "The Children's Shakespeare" (1911), "Grimm's Fairy Tales" (1911), "Aesop's Fables" (1912), "The Arabian Nights" (1913), "British Fairy and Folk Tales" (1920), "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" (1929), "The Princess and Curdie", "The Princess and the Goblin" (1949) ), and "The Book of Nonsense by Many Authors" (1956).
