Nikolai Shurygin was born in Kimry in 1957. In 1985, he graduated from the Moscow Higher Art and Technical School (formerly Stroganov).
For 10 years, the artist studied the techniques of multi-layer painting, the secrets of which were lost at the beginning of the 19th century. This unique technique was used by Flemish painters. At one time in Russia, these painting techniques were mastered by such masters as O. Kiprensky, V. Borovikovsky, D. Levitsky. The uniqueness of this complex technique lies in the fact that each previous pictorial layer is visible through the next, thereby creating the utmost realism of the transmitted image, be it a human face or any other complex texture - silver, gold, brocade, fur, crystal, etc. Time of painting a portrait or still life in this technique ranges from 4 to 12 months.
