Nikolai Kornilovich Pymonenko (Ukrainian: Mykola Kornilovich Pymonenko; March 9, 1862 - March 26, 1912) was a Ukrainian painter, author of many paintings on national Ukrainian themes.
N.K. Pimonenko was born in Kyiv on March 9, 1862. The son of an icon painter and woodcarver, Nikolai Pimonenko from an early age traveled with his father to villages, helping him paint the iconostases of local churches. And along the way I got to know the villagers, their way of life, their trade, their way of life. Apparently, these childhood impressions formed the basis for everyday and landscape paintings painted much later. First there was the Kiev drawing school of Nikolai Ivanovich Murashko, where the future artist received his initial (perhaps his main) art education (1876-1882).
From 1882 to 1884 N. Pimonenko attended the Pedagogical Courses of the Academy of Arts. And my studies went well: I received three medals in the first academic year. Unfortunately, the young artist’s health did not allow him to fully fulfill his program of stay in St. Petersburg: the damp St. Petersburg climate affected him, and financial problems arose. And having received small and large encouragement medals and a certificate for the title of art teacher, N. Pimonenko leaves for his native Kyiv, where he teaches at the Kyiv drawing school N. I. Murashko and the Kiev art school.
However, he does not forget to paint. In 1885, he sent the painting “In the Gallery” to St. Petersburg for an academic exhibition, inspired by Gogol’s comedy “Marriage” seen in the theater. The picture was noticed and people started talking about it.
Pimonenko also takes part in Kyiv opening days. He takes themes for his everyday paintings from the life of the Little Russians around him. The titles of the paintings alone allow us to judge the artist’s interest in the genre, in everyday scenes: “Wooed” (1886), “On Maundy Thursday” (1887), “Apart from me” (1887), “On vacation” (1887), “The Artist "(1887), "Yuletide fortune-telling" (1888), "Afanasy Ivanovich and Khavronya Nikiforovna" (1889).
The paintings attracted the viewer, they were mentioned in the press, but real success came in 1888, with the painting “Yuletide Fortune-Telling.” Here is how one of the artist’s contemporaries evaluates it: “Two Ukrainian girls tell fortunes at Christmas time with a candle in their hands using cast wax. The picture was a success. Copies were made from it. I had to make one of them at the request of A. Shomin’s store, which traded on Bolshoy Prospekt on the Petersburg side.”
In 1891, for the paintings “Wedding in the Kyiv Province” and “Morning of Christ’s Resurrection” N.K. Pimonenko received the title of honorary free associate of the Academy of Arts. In 1904 he was awarded the title of academician.
N.K. Pimonenko actively participates in public artistic life. The artist’s paintings are eagerly purchased by collectors, and even the Louvre is in a hurry to become the owner of one of the artist’s paintings - in 1909 it bought “Gopak” by N. K. Pimonenko.
Nikolai Kornilovich Pimonenko died in his native Kyiv on March 26, 1912.
