Orlovsky Vladimir Donatovich (1842-1914)

Biography
Born into a noble family. He graduated from the 2nd Kyiv gymnasium, where he acquired initial skills in drawing under the guidance of N. M. Soshenko. Used the advice of T. G. Shevchenko. In 1861-1868 he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under A.P. Bogolyubov. During his studies he received all existing academic awards: in 1862 - a small silver medal for landscapes, in 1863 - a large silver medal, in 1866 - a small gold medal. In the summers of 1864 and 1865 he went to Crimea to sketch. In 1866 he studied monuments of Moscow architecture. In 1867 he made a trip to the Kyiv and Tauride provinces, and in 1868 he visited Finland. In 1868, for three landscapes with views of the Crimea, he was awarded a large gold medal, received the title of class artist of the 1st degree and the right to a pensioner's trip abroad for a period of three years.
In 1869-1872 - pensioner of the Imperial Academy of Arts in France and Switzerland. In 1872 he returned to St. Petersburg, having received permission from the Academy Council to extend the period of pensioner support in Russia for another three years. In 1874, for the paintings “Before the Squall”, “Sunset”, “Swamp”, “In the Steppe”, “Evening”, “Sowing”, “Forest Log”, “Sands” he was awarded the title of academician. In 1875 he made a trip to Italy. In 1876, for the paintings “Haymaking”, “The Pier in Pozzuoli”, “Morning on the Shore of the Gulf of Naples” and “On the Sea before a Storm” he was confirmed as a professor of landscape painting. Among his students: N. S. Samokish, P. A. Levchenko and others. Since 1878 - supernumerary member of the Council of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
In 1881 he made a trip to the Caucasus, and in the 1880s - 1890s he periodically visited the Crimea. In 1900-1902 he lived in Kyiv, where he took an active part in the work of the Kyiv Drawing School named after. N. I. Murashko; was a member of the School's artistic council. He became one of the organizers of the Kyiv Art School, opened in 1901.
He exhibited his works at exhibitions in the halls of the Imperial Academy of Arts (1868-1888, with interruptions), the Society for Exhibitions of Art Works (1876-1882), the St. Petersburg Society of Artists (1891-1904), at the World Exhibitions in Philadelphia (1876) and Paris (1878 ), All-Russian Art and Industrial Exhibition in Moscow (1882).
From 1909 he lived in Italy (buried in Kyiv).
In 1916, a memorial exhibition of Orlovsky took place in Moscow (together with N.K. Pimonenko).
Orlovsky is one of the largest Russian landscape painters of the second half of the 19th century, a representative of academicism. The artist’s works are characterized by rigor of compositional structure, meticulous elaboration of details, and close attention to the effects of natural lighting.
