Thomas Gainsborough (eng. Thomas Gainsborough; May 14, 1727 - August 2, 1788) was an English painter whose brushes produced some of the most sophisticated and exquisite portraits. The master had the rare gift of very accurately conveying the spirituality and lyricism of his characters. Extraordinarily beautiful pearlescent tints and cool blue tones make up a rich palette of colors with characteristic shimmer and trembling. The technique of the drawing process itself is also very interesting. The artist used liquid paints and very long brushes. Also used were an ordinary sponge, whitewash, sugar tweezers, or simply the artist’s finger, with which he shaded the paint.
