The name of Mikhail Konstantinovich Klodt (Baron Klodt von Jurgensburg) should be mentioned without any reservation among the outstanding Russian landscape artists. First of all, naturally, for his wide talent, his great skill, his magnificent landscapes. But it is important to add something else. Baron Klodt von Jurgensburg was a great patriot of Russian nature and, therefore, of Russia.
Born into the Klodt family, famous for its talents in art, he received an excellent artistic education (he studied drawing at the Mountain Cadet Corps with I.F. Khrutsky and landscape painting at the Academy of Arts with M.N. and S.N. Vorobyov), who showed great skill in training, M.K. After a year of being on a retirement trip abroad, Klodt asks for permission to return to his homeland in order to use his pension to travel around Russia. Klodt's talent, honed by his academic education, allows him to create wonderful, purely Russian landscapes.
M.K. Klodt became one of the founders of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. It was natural for the artist to receive all official academic titles. Since 1872, he headed the landscape class at the Academy of Arts. Unfortunately, eye disease sharply curtailed his creative and teaching activities already from the 1880s. But created by M.K. Klodt is a notable contribution to Russian art of the 19th century.
