Charles Gates Sheldon was born in 1889. He made a dizzying career as an illustrator, and to this day connoisseurs and collectors readily purchase his masterpieces of commercial art. The "Breck Girl" pin-up symbol became a favorite image in the American advertising industry in the mid-1930s and was used to advertise shampoo for almost a quarter of a century. Sheldon's unique pastel drawings have appeared not only in numerous advertising projects, but also on the covers of leading print publications. The artist painted thousands of world-famous movie stars for Photoplay, Movie Classic, Screenland and similar film industry magazines. It was this work that brought him the greatest fame. Sheldon also painted pastel portraits of such prominent figures as Carole Lombard, Shirley Temple, Joan Crawford, and Greta Garbo. The images of these and other stars of the 20-30s of the twentieth century became his most significant contribution to the development of glamor art.
