MECCA is a city in Saudi Arabia, the administrative and commercial center of the Hijaz region. The birthplace of Muhammad, the founder of Islam, is the main place of pilgrimage for Muslims.
The founding of the city is not known with certainty. First mentioned by Ptolemy as Macoraba. Before the birth of Islam, it played an important role in trade between the East and the countries of the Mediterranean basin, and was the religious center of the pagan tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. The founder of Islam, Muhammad, was born here. Soon he conquered Mecca and commanded Muslims to make a pilgrimage to the Kaaba.
Non-Muslims are prohibited from entering Mecca. The only exception was made for French special forces in 1979 to liberate the Al-Ahram or Al-Haram mosque from militants who had captured it. Warning signs hang at the entrances to the city
The Kaaba is a mosque to which the eyes of all Muslims are turned every day during prayer. This has been happening for more than 1400 years since
Literally, the word “Kaaba” in Arabic means “a high place surrounded by honor and respect.” This word may also be derived from the word "cube". Other names for the Kaaba include words such as "Bayt al Ateq", the first meaning of which is "the earliest and the most ancient." According to the second meaning, this word is translated as "independent and liberating." Both meanings are combined in the word “Bayt al-Haram” - “sacred house”.
