Aerial Photos of Salt Pans Blurring the Lines Between Photography and Painting
Canadian photographer David Burdeny has been working on a major photo project for some time now. He began shooting the series "SALT: Fields, Plottings, and Extracts," using aerial photography to explore some of the world's most colorful salt pans in Utah, Mexico, and Australia. Looking at these images, it's difficult to determine whether the colors and gradations are paintings or photographs, whether they are man-made or natural.
An essay about this photo project states: "In their use of amorphous forms, expansive fields of color, and vertical, zigzagging, and flowing lines, Bardeny's photographs recall the painterly expressiveness of Rothko, Still, Newman, Diebenkorn, and the late Willem de Kooning."
